(Sept 16, 2008) [Photos by Jen Rae Hein ] - Gov. Dave Heineman honored 265 Nebraska World War II veterans at the World War II Memorial on the National Mall.  The veterans travelled to Washington, D.C. as part of Nebraska’s third official "Heartland Honor Flight" to see their memorial.  The group saw the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery, the U.S. Air Force Memorial, and the U.S. Marine Corp War Memorial, commonly referred to as the Iwo Jima Memorial before flying back to Nebraska.

Nebraska’s “Heartland Honor Flight” program is organized by Bill and Evonne Williams of Omaha. The trips are funded by private donations. The goal is to allow those who fought in World War II, most of who are in their 80s and 90s now, to visit the memorial while they're still able to do so.

The next flight is currently being scheduled for October 2008.
