![]() Governor Heineman, First Lady Sally Ganem and University of Nebraska president James B. ("J.B.") Milliken, take the opportunity to meet Flat Stanley from Bremerton, WA. Flat Stanley, a well known character in grade schools across the country, was visiting Mary Kay Wood in Lincoln as a part of her grandson Bradley Mefford's geography project. Flat Stanley has a very special connection to Nebraska as Bradley's dad serves aboard the USS Nebraska so coming to Nebraska had special meaning for the class. Stanley’s trip to Nebraska netted high distinction among the Stanley's in the project thanks to the governor, first lady and the NU president's visit. He left Nebraska with an honorary Admiralship, and enough information about Nebraska to educate Mrs. Hemry's second grade class about our great state. Below is Mary Kay's letter regarding the visit: |
| Well, here is Flat Stanley and his new friends in the Governor's Mansion. I am just delighted that he is going to make it to the web page. I am more delighted that the Governor and First Lady took the time to be involved in this educational activity for my grandson, Bradley. My son, who serves on the USS Nebraska is really enjoying the "press" that Stanley is getting and that the hat and Command Coins he sent from the sub for Stanley to present to the Governor in appreciation (one never calls without a gift, you know!) are now in the Mansion. It has truly been an amazing journey for all of us. (Stanley just returned from a Caribbean Cruise with friends and is planning to keep on traveling sending pictures and information about where he visits to Mrs. Hemry's 2nd grade class!) Thank you for contacting me. Mary Kay Wood |
