Gov. Heineman Announces Finalists for
New Nebraska Adjutant General

(Lincoln, Neb.) PHOTO GALLERY - Gov. Dave Heineman today announced the four finalists forwarded for his consideration in selecting the next adjutant general for the Nebraska National Guard. He asked a screening panel led by retired Maj. Gen. Walt Zink of Lincoln to review the applications of first-round candidates and recommend several finalists.

The finalists are Col. Daryl Bohac, Col. Richard Evans, Col. Judd Lyons, and Col. David Zwart.

Gov. Heineman will schedule interviews with finalists in the near future. He intends to name a successor by Sept. 1, ahead of Maj. Gen. Timothy Kadavy departing to become deputy director of the U.S. Army National Guard.

Currently, Col. Bohac directs the day to day operations of the state’s Air National Guard staff and is vice-director of the Guard’s Joint Staff. Col. Evans is commander of the 155th Air Refueling Wing. Col. Lyons is director of the Guard Joint Staff and manages the daily operations of the Army National Guard staff. Col. Zwart is a property and fiscal officer responsible for accounting for all federal funds and equipment provided to the Nebraska National Guard.

To be considered for adjutant general, applicants must have served at least five years in the Nebraska National Guard and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. Candidates must be less than the mandatory military retirement age of 64 and must be eligible to attend the military schools necessary for promotion to general officer.

In addition to commanding the Nebraska’s military forces, the adjutant general is a member of the Governor’s Cabinet and serves as the director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), working with civilian emergency preparedness and disaster response personnel for the state. NEMA also coordinates state and federal emergency planning and disaster recovery efforts and assists local governments with training and education programs.

The Nebraska National Guard is comprised of Army National Guard and Air National Guard personnel. The Nebraska Army National Guard consists of 3,828 soldiers assigned to units located in 27 Nebraska communities.
