Gov. Heineman Announces Promotion of Nebraska Adjutant General to National Post

Gen. Tim Kadavy
(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today announced that Maj. Gen. Tim Kadavy, Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard, has been named Deputy Director of the Army National Guard. His start date has not yet been determined but is expected to be in the next few months.

“I want to congratulate General Kadavy,” Gov. Heineman said. “He has been an outstanding adjutant general. This is great news for him and it speaks well of his leadership. It also speaks highly of Nebraska. The fact that the number two person leading the Army National Guard comes from Nebraska is a high honor for the Nebraska National Guard.”

Kadavy, 45, is Nebraska’s 31st adjutant general. He assumed command of the Nebraska National Guard on Nov. 3, 2007.

As Deputy Director, Gen. Kadavy will be responsible for assisting the director of the Army National Guard in formulating and coordinating all programs, policies and plans affecting the Army National Guard and its more than 350,000 citizen-soldiers. He will be assigned to the National Guard Headquarters in Arlington, Va.

As adjutant general, he was the senior uniformed National Guard officer responsible for leading the more than 4,800 Army and Air National Guard personnel in the state. He is also a member of the Governor’s Cabinet and directs the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency.

During the past two years, Nebraska soldiers and airmen have mobilized as part of overseas deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Greece, and Kosovo.

Domestically, men and women of the Nebraska National Guard responded to last year’s tornadoes in Omaha and Kearney, as well as California wildfires, and Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. The hurricane deployment was the largest domestic mission in Nebraska National Guard history involving more than 1,000 personnel and support equipment.

Other highlights of Kadavy’s tenure include exceeding recruiting goals in the Nebraska Air National Guard and the Nebraska Army National Guard, as well as the completion of the Guard’s Army Aviation Facility in Grand Island and readiness centers in Kearney and Hastings.

“My decision to leave was bittersweet,” Kadavy said. “I am very proud to have led such a great team and that has accomplished so much. Our operations tempo has been very high, both in the war on terror and domestic missions, but our soldiers, airmen and emergency management staff have excelled in every mission.”

Prior to his current assignment, Gen. Kadavy served as Operations Officer for the Army National Guard Directorate at the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, Va.

He commanded the Nebraska Army National Guard’s 1-167th Cavalry Squadron during its 2002 to 2003 deployment for Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia Herzegovina and served as chief of the Reserve Component Support Division at Camp Victory in Iraq, leading a multinational corps in 2006.

Gen. Kadavy received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a Master of Arts degree from Webster University. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army War College Fellowship Program with the Drug Enforcement Agency.

As commander in chief of the Nebraska National Guard, Gov. Heineman will select the state’s next adjutant general. Additional details on the selection process will be announced at a later date, but it will be similar to the process used in selecting Gen. Kadavy with a panel reviewing applicants and forwarding a list of finalists to the Governor. The Governor intends to name a successor by Sept. 1.
