Gov. Heineman Signs Budget for Next Biennium

(Lincoln Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today signed the main line budget bill, LB 315e, without any vetoes.

“In reviewing the budget over the past few days, it was clear that it met the four principles I outlined in my original budget proposal,” Gov. Heineman said. “Two years ago we restrained spending which put us in the position to weather the current fiscal storm. This budget helps us take another step forward as we look to the next two difficult years.”

The Governor’s initial budget recommendations included the following priorities: ensuring no tax increases, priority funding for education, continuing funding for programs for vulnerable children and families, and maintaining a strong cash reserve fund for future years.

In a letter to Speaker Mike Flood and members of the Legislature the Governor wrote, “I want to commend the leadership of Appropriations Committee Chairman Senator Lavon Heidemann and Education Chairman Senator Greg Adams for their work this session. I appreciate the strong support of the Legislature in voting for the Appropriations Committee’s budget without any amendments.

“This has been a difficult budget cycle, given the financial challenges that America and Nebraska face. Even with the challenges we face, I am confident we can continue to move Nebraska forward if we can find ways of restraining spending.”
