Gov. Heineman Asks Administration to Review
Preliminary Decision on Global Strike Command

(Lincoln Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today sent a letter to President Obama urging him to suspend the U.S. Air Force decision to locate the new Global Strike Command headquarters in Louisiana.

The Governor wrote, “Offutt Air Force Base finished first in every evaluation category. I am writing to ask you to suspend the decision to locate the Global Strike Command at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.”

Last week the Air Force announced Barksdale Air Force Base as the preferred location for the new command overseeing the Air Force’s nuclear operations.

Since then, the Air Force shared scoring criteria for the five bases selected as finalists. Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base received 89 of a possible 100 points, eight points higher than Barksdale’s score of 81.

Offutt received higher scores than the five finalists on criteria including: mission synergy, support capacity, and transportation. Offutt’s scores were higher than Barksdale, and tied with at least one other base, in the areas of facilities and communications/bandwidth. All finalists received the same score on base security criteria.
