First Recovery Funds Awarded for State Road Improvements

(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today announced the distribution of more than $25 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding for upgrades to state highways. The seven projects are the first in a series of roads projects to be awarded ARRA funding.

The first phase of improvements includes:

In addition, the Governor announced the next series of contracts to be put out for bid by the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR). Bid letting is scheduled for April 16, with contracts to be awarded soon after.

Included are improvements to 11 projects connected to the state highway system and one local project. Information on projects and any changes are available on the NDOR website, http://www.nebraskatransportation.org.

Total ARRA funding for roads in Nebraska is expected to total $235.6 million, with the State receiving $157.8 million. NDOR will release additional projects for bid every 30 days until all state roads funds are obligated.

In addition to state roads funding, the city of Omaha will receive $23.2 million and the city of Lincoln $9.4 million. First class cities will receive a total $29.2 million, counties will receive $9 million, and trails and historical preservation projects will receive $7 million. NDOR is working with city and county officials, the League of Nebraska Municipalities and the Nebraska Association of County Officials to prioritize local road improvement projects.
