Gov. Heineman Appoints Derek Weimer of
Gering to 12th Judicial District Judgeship

(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today announced his appointment of Derek Weimer of Gering to serve as a district court judge for the 12th Judicial District, which encompasses Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Grant, Kimball, Morrill, Sioux, Sheridan, and Scotts Bluff Counties.

Weimer, 34, has served as Scotts Bluff County Attorney since 2007. He was named a partner at Kovarik, Ellison, Mathis & Weimer, P.C. in 2003 after joining the firm to work as an associate in 1999.

He is a member of the Nebraska and Wyoming State Bar Associations, and has served as president of the Nebraska Bar’s Young Lawyers Section. He has been recognized by the Nebraska Foster Care Review Board for his work as a guardian ad litem. He was on the board of the Court Appointed Special Advocates from 2002 to 2003.

Weimer’s community service includes serving on the board of the Buckboard Therapeutic Riding Academy since 2001. He is a founder and board member of the Golden Halo Foundation, which helps provide the medical equipment and assistance in seeking treatment for families with children who have special needs. He is a trustee of the Scottsbluff Elks Lodge and past president of the Gering Kiwanis Club.

Weimer graduated magna cum laude from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa in 1995. He received his law degree from Creighton University in 1999.

Weimer resides in Gering with his wife Michelle and children Kollyn, Mikayla, Elizabeth, and Dru.
