Governors Make Friendly Wager for Charity over Gator Bowl

Winning Governor will have Food Donated in his Name

(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today announced a friendly wager with South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford on the outcome of the upcoming Gator Bowl. Charities in each state will receive a donation of food in the name of the Governor representing the winning team.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Cornhuskers will face the Clemson University Tigers on Thursday, Jan. 1 in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Nebraska Cattlemen association will provide 400 pounds of high-quality Nebraska beef to the People’s City Mission in Lincoln. If the Huskers win the Gator Bowl, the donation will be made in the name of Gov. Heineman. Should the Tigers win the donation will be made in the name of Gov. Sanford.

“I am really proud of Coach Pelini and our Huskers,” Gov. Heineman said. “I want to thank the Nebraska Cattlemen for their generous donation. While we can have some fun with our football, I am also pleased a worthy charity will be helped at the end of the day.”

In South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture’s “S.C. Grown” campaign will donate a variety of agricultural products to the Harvest Hope Food Bank in the capital city of Columbia in the name of the Governor representing the winning team.

Gov. Sanford said, “We’re awfully proud to have both of our major universities playing in New Year’s Day bowl games, and we know that both teams will represent our state well. More importantly, I want to thank Governor Heineman and our Department of Agriculture for joining with us on this front, in having some good-natured fun in a way that also helps give back to those in need.”

The People’s City Mission has been part of the Lincoln community for more than 100 years, providing food and shelter to homeless persons. Between 500 and 1,000 pounds of meat are prepared and served at the shelter each week.

Pastor Tom Barber, Executive Director of the People’s City Mission, said, “We are honored to be part of this wager for some great Nebraska beef. We now have a lot ‘at steak’ in this game and we are confident this donation will end up in our hands in the name of Governor Heineman.”

Nebraska Cattlemen President Todd Schroeder said, “Nebraska is the ‘Beef State’ and we are proud to support Gov. Heineman, the Huskers and People’s City Mission in this effort.”

The Nebraska Cattlemen association represents the state’s beef cattle industry and professional cattle breeders, ranchers and feeders, and is the state organization working with 48 county and local cattlemen’s associations across Nebraska.
