Nebraska Now Offering Online
Renewal for Vehicle Registration

(Lincoln, Neb.) Photo Gallery - Gov. Dave Heineman announced that Nebraskans now have the option to log onto the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Web site to renew their license plates. Online vehicle renewal is the latest service added to Nebraska’s menu of e-government services.

“We’re always looking to expand our online services,” Gov. Heineman said. “With this service, Nebraskans can file their renewal paperwork online rather than waiting in line. Online motor vehicle registration renewal is one of the most requested services and I want to congratulate everyone involved for making this project a reality for the people of our state.”

To renew a car or truck registration online, users need only the information on their current vehicle registration slip or the renewal postcard sent by their county treasurer’s office, along with bank account information or a MasterCard or Visa credit card. The online renewal process automatically checks the Motor Vehicle Insurance Database to verify vehicle insurance. The online renewal process can be completed in minutes.

Beverly Neth, Director of the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, said, “This has been a productive year for the DMV. Because of the opportunity to save time and hassle for Nebraska citizens, this is one of the projects we’re most excited about. I want to recognize the partnership of our 93 county treasurers whose offices are responsible for processing online applications. I particularly want to recognize the Douglas County Treasurer’s office for helping us test this new system.”

Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing said, “Online renewal is a tremendous convenience to the citizens of Douglas County. I will be monitoring the program closely. As usage increases, I expect to see the potential for cost savings and reduction in brick and mortar costs.”

Nearly 1.9 million vehicles are eligible to renew license plates using the online process. Certain commercial vehicles are excluded from filing online due to additional documentation needed for license renewal.

DMV also unveiled a new look to its Web site, http://www.clickdmv.ne.gov, which makes the DMV online applications easy to find and easy to use. In addition to online vehicle renewal, Nebraskans can use the Web site to order specialty plates, reinstate a driver’s licenses and estimate vehicle taxes. The department is already developing plans to allow drivers the option of renewing their driver’s license online.

DMV developed the application with the team that designs and supports the state web portal, http://www.Nebraska.gov. A link to online renewal can also be found on Nebraska.gov.
