Gov. Heineman Looks to New Beginning in Educational Cooperation(Lincoln, Neb.) - Photos - Gov. Dave Heineman today pledged a new level of cooperation and collaboration among Nebraska’s educational leaders. The Governor was joined by State Sen. Ron Raikes, Chairman of the Legislature’s Education Committee, Fred Meyer, President of the Nebraska State Board of Education, and Roger Breed, Nebraska’s incoming Commissioner of Education, in describing a new partnership focused on resolving educational issues. “This new spirit of cooperation and collaboration is important as we address the education challenges of the 21st century,” Gov. Heineman said. “We are preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist. In order to be fully prepared for tomorrow’s workforce, our students need at least two years of college, whether that’s a community college, a state college, or a public or private college or university. More than ever, our students need the education that empowers them with new information and the knowledge to access new information.” The first of the new cooperative steps being taken will be monthly meetings between the Governor and Commissioner to discuss key education issues. Gov. Heineman said, “The State Board of Education has named a new Commissioner of Education and Roger Breed is a great choice. I have known Roger for several years. He is an outstanding leader, an effective communicator, and a strong advocate for students. I look forward to working with him. “Whether the issue is increasing the level of academic rigor in our schools, closing the academic achievement gap, implementing statewide assessments, addressing the need for sustainable funding for our schools, or working to promote even greater parental involvement; it is critical that the Commissioner of Education, the State Board of Education, the Legislature, and the Governor work together in a cooperative and collaborative manner.” |
