Gov. Heineman Awards $200,000 in Community Development
Grant Funding to Falls City

(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman has awarded $200,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to Falls City for a Nebraska Tourism Development project that will transform the Hotel Stephenson into a conference and convention center.

“This is good news for Falls City,” Gov. Heineman said. “This project transforms a well-known local landmark into a convention center to help attract a growing regional tourism market. The CDBG program allows us the freedom to target funding to projects that benefit small communities in particular; places where a small amount can make a real difference.”

The city has contracted with Dream Weaver LLC, to oversee the project that involves modifying the building’s main entrance, restrooms and other areas to comply with the American with Disabilities Act, and replacing an obsolete elevator. Dream Weaver is investing an additional $190,000 in the project.

Once completed, the Falls City Conference & Convention Center will be marketed as a destination for regional conferences, conventions and corporate retreats accommodating up to 180 people. Situated between Indian Cave State Park and Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri, Falls City and surrounding Richardson County are particularly attractive sites for eco-tourism events.

Federal funds are made available to Nebraska from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s CDBG program, which assists with the development of businesses and communities throughout the state.

The Nebraska Tourism Development program is administered by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. More information on The Nebraska Tourism Development program is available at: http://industry.visitnebraska.org.
