Gov. Heineman Honors Nebraska’s WWII Veterans and "Heartland Honor Flight"
(Monday, July 7, 2008 - Photos) Gov. Dave Heineman honored approximately 120 Nebraska World War II veterans at Memorial Stadium. The Nebraskans at the dinner are flying to Washington, D.C. as part of a "Heartland Honor Flight" to see the World War II Memorial on the National Mall. The pre-flight dinner was held at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln Memorial Stadium and was hosted by KFOR’s Mark Taylor.
The veterans were escorted by Patriot Guard Riders. This is the second “Heartland Honor Flight” organized by Bill and Evonne Williams of Omaha. The trips are funded by private donations. The goal is to allow those who fought in World War II, most of who are in their 80s and 90s now, to visit the memorial while they're still able to do so. The group also planned stops at Arlington National Cemetery and the Iwo Jima Memorial before flying back to Nebraska.
