Gov. Heineman Provides Update on State Storm Response

(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today provided an update on the damage assessments underway following several weeks of severe storms and tornadoes that have hit the state.

“I’ve spoken with Nebraska Emergency Management officials and we hope to have assessments for most of the damage that’s occurred so far in Nebraska by the end of the week,” Gov. Heineman said. “However, given the potential for more storms today, we may have additional work to do. It’s important to include all eligible damage in our report but we expect to submit a request for a federal disaster declaration soon.” (Storm over Omaha Photo provided by Nathan Hamilton

Nebraska Emergency Management Agency has been working with federal teams to compile damage assessments during the past few weeks.

Since May 22, at least 60 of Nebraska’s 93 counties have been impacted by this series of storms. Damage to public infrastructure, including utilities, bridges and roads, is currently estimated to be in excess of $20 million.

Estimates on damage to private homes and businesses are not yet available, but emergency management officials have determined that at least 36 homes throughout the state have been destroyed. An additional 95 residences suffered major structural damage, with 293 homes receiving minor damage. While damage to farm land and infrastructure is not available yet, assessments indicated that another 1,132 homes experienced some loss or damage from the storms.
