Gov. Heineman Provides Update on
‘KnowHow2GO’ College Access Campaign

(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman was joined today by University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken, Liz Fieselman, President of EducationQuest Foundation, and Miss Nebraska Ashley Bauer in providing an update on efforts to encourage more students to plan ahead for college as part of the ‘KnowHow2GO’ campaign.

“I’ve challenged education leaders to make it a priority to increase Nebraska’s college-going rate, and I’m pleased that so many educational institutions and groups have gotten involved in promoting KnowHow2GO here in Nebraska,” Gov. Heineman said. “It’s helped focus our efforts on reaching students that haven’t decided for sure to attend college. My hope is that this campaign will help encourage more Nebraska high school graduates to go to college in the years ahead.”

‘KnowHow2GO’ is a national campaign created to encourage students to take four steps to begin planning for college. Steps include finding someone who can help guide them through the process; pushing themselves by taking rigorous classes; finding the right fit by learning about colleges that fit their career interests; and finding out about college funding options.

The campaign is being coordinated in Nebraska by EducationQuest Foundation, a nonprofit organization working to improve access to higher education in Nebraska.

Since its kick-off in June, EducationQuest has provided information on ‘KnowHow2GO’ to 80,000 8th, 9th and 10th graders across the state and organized visits several schools to talk with more than 2,500 students about planning ahead for college. Pep rallies promoting ‘KnowHow2GO’ were held at Falls City, Ogallala and Lincoln North Star High Schools, as well as Lewis and Clark Middle School in Omaha and Horizon Middle School in Kearney.

EducationQuest has also placed public service announcements on billboards and worked with print and broadcast media to spread the word about ‘KnowHow2Go.’

As part of its efforts to increase Nebraska’s college-going rate, EducationQuest is planning to hold a college access symposium for high school guidance counselors on April 3, 2008, as a way to share best practices in helping students plan for college based on ‘KnowHow2GO,’ and will provide $800,000 in college access grants to several Nebraska high schools in the coming year.
