(Lincoln, NE) Beginning this week, the Nebraska State Capitol plays host to ‘America’s Favorite Architecture’ exhibit. Sponsored by the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA), the exhibit features the Nebraska State Capitol, ranked 67th on the list of America’s 150 favorite buildings. “In the 75 years since the Capitol was completed, this building has become a widely recognized symbol of our state,” said Gov. Dave Heineman, chairman of the Nebraska Capitol Commission. “This exhibit is a reminder that we are fortunate to have a capitol that incorporates the culture and history of our state in its design. Hosting this exhibit provides the opportunity for visitors come back and be reminded of what makes this building so unique, while also seeing some of the country’s most memorable examples of great architecture.” Featuring colorful, oversized photos of each structure, the exhibit will be on display in the Capitol’s first floor rotunda until Oct. 25. The State Capitol is the only Nebraska building featured and is one of only four capitol buildings on the list. Others include the Texas and Virginia Capitol buildings, and the U.S. Capitol. Bertram Goodhue, architect of the Nebraska capitol, has one other building on the list; the downtown Los Angeles Public Library. Capitol Administrator Bob Ripley said, “Those who designed our Capitol wanted to create a building that would have a lasting impact on the state of Nebraska. Since its completion, it has served as a benchmark of great architecture in our state. It is a privilege to serve as a steward of one of Nebraska’s most significant and historic buildings.” The nationally traveling exhibit was brought to the state by the Nebraska Chapter of the AIA. The exhibit was conceived to help celebrate AIA’s 150th anniversary. In coming up with the 150 buildings featured in the ‘America’s Favorite Architecture,’ AIA polled citizens, asking them to rank their favorite buildings. Included on the list were capitols, libraries, airports, office buildings, cathedrals, bridges, museums, and private residences, among others. More information about the exhibit is available online at http://www.favoritearchitecture.org. The public is invited to tour the exhibit. The Capitol is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Visit the Nebraska State Capitol Web site, http://www.capitol.org, for more information about the building’s design and construction. |
