(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman today announced the pending retirement of Nebraska State Fire Marshal Dennis Hohbein. The Fire Marshal's last day is Dec. 29.
"Dennis brought a lifetime of experience to his prominent role in fire prevention and investigations, and Nebraskans are proud of the job he's done," Gov. Heineman said.
Hohbein joined the Fire Marshal's Office in 1975 as a Deputy State Fire Marshal, having worked previously as a paid firefighter, fire inspector, driver, pump operator and fire investigator in Beatrice. At the Fire Marshal's Office, Hohbein worked his way through the ranks, ascending to Chief Deputy Fire Marshal in 1977 and serving as chief deputy until 1995, when he became Safety Coordinator for the Beatrice State Developmental Center.
Hohbein returned as Assistant State Fire Marshal in April 2000 and was appointed by then-Gov. Mike Johanns to his current post in February 2003. As Fire Marshal, Hohbein helped the office re-establish its arson investigation division, establish a system of background checks on its employees, establish nighttime testing of fireworks, improve interagency relationships with other fire departments and partner with the Nebraska Forest Service to work toward a goal of preventing and containing forest and wild land fires.
Hohbein said, "I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to work alongside so many dedicated men and women in this office and across this state. While I am proud of our ability to investigate fires and their causes, I am most proud of our efforts working with local partners to help people prevent fires in the first place."
Individuals interested in filling the Fire Marshal's position should contact Peggy King in the Governor's Office, at P.O. Box 94848, Lincoln, NE 68509.
