(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman today announced that Nebraska Tax Commissioner Mary Jane Egr Edson will be leaving her post as director of the Department of Revenue.
"Mary Jane has served two governors and the State of Nebraska with distinction," Gov. Heineman said. "She has been a strong voice and strong leader for the Nebraska Department of Revenue, and we appreciate the culture of innovation and efficiency she fostered within the department during her seven years in office."
Egr Edson said, "I have the utmost respect for Governor Heineman and his administration. It has been my great privilege to work for both he and Governor Mike Johanns and to serve the people of my home state. I have enjoyed my work with the department, but it is time to pursue new challenges and a new direction."
Then-Gov. Johanns appointed Egr Edson as Nebraska Tax Commissioner in 1999. In addition to her work at the department, she has served as President of the Federation of Tax Administrators and is a member of its Board of Trustees. She is currently President of the regional organization, the Midwestern States Association of Tax Administrators.
Egr Edson just completed a three-year term on the Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee, a federally-appointed group that advises the Internal Revenue Service on various issues involving electronic filing. She is also Nebraska's delegate to the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, a multi-state initiative to simplify sales tax rules in an effort to encourage Internet and mail-order sellers to voluntarily collect the tax. Prior to her appointment, Egr Edson was a state tax consulting partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in McLean, Va. She has also worked for Grant Thornton in Chicago, and worked as a staff attorney at the Department of Revenue from 1988 to 1990.
Egr Edson said, "I am weighing several different career opportunities, but I wanted to give Governor Heineman sufficient time to find a replacement. This has been a great chapter in my career, and I will miss the people at the department very much. They are dedicated professionals who care deeply about this state and its citizens."
A formal effective date of Egr Edson's resignation has not been set.
