Gov. Heineman Chosen to Head Economic
Development Efforts for NGA

(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman has been named chairman of the Economic Development and Commerce committee of the National Governors Association (NGA) for the 2006-2007 year.

“I appreciate the opportunity to lead efforts in this area,” Gov. Heineman said. “Advancing Nebraska’s economic development has been a top priority for me since taking office, and I’m eager to get to work with my fellow governors on a number of important issues before this committee.”

The Economic Development and Commerce Committee is one of the NGA’s four standing committees charged with addressing issues impacting states’ economic development efforts, ranging from transportation infrastructure, telecommunications and international trade promotion to financial services regulation, science and technology development, and affordable housing.

The announcement was made during the closing session of the 98th annual meeting of the NGA yesterday in Charleston, S.C. The NGA’s new policy initiative for the coming year was also unveiled at the closing session.

The Innovation America initiative was designed to highlight two areas that are critical to the nation’s future success, including increased student proficiency in math and science in order to equip students with problem solving skills, and encouraging states to further develop industries that rely on innovation for future growth.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues on this initiative in the coming year,” Gov. Heineman said. “Economic development goes hand in hand with our efforts to train America’s youth for the careers they will one day pursue. Here in Nebraska, we’ve sought to involve our business community as our partners in the effort to better prepare students to meet this challenge, and I’m excited to continue this discussion on the national level.”

The NGA serves as the collective voice of the nation’s governors and is a bipartisan public policy organization.
