(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman is seeking qualified candidates to represent the residents of western and west-central Nebraska on the University of Nebraska (NU) Board of Regents.
State law requires the Governor to appoint a new member to replace former regent David Hergert. Gov. Heineman’s appointee will serve through Jan. 9, 2007. In order to fill out the remainder of the unexpired term, which runs through 2010, the appointee would have to petition onto the ballot for the upcoming general election and be elected by the voters of District 7.
Gov. Heineman said, “In filling this vacancy, one of my top priorities is to appoint a regent capable of representing the best interests of all of western Nebraska. My hope is to find someone who understands the university’s missions of outreach, education, creativity, and research. In particular, this individual should have a detailed understanding of how the university interfaces with agriculture, agribusiness and rural economic development efforts to improve our state.
“Nebraska is ready to put the last two years spent on this issue behind us, and I hope to act quickly to help the board and the university continue with the work that lies ahead.”
Members of the Board of Regents supervise the general operations of the university system, are granted control and direction of all university expenditures, and establish general operating policies for the university.
To be considered for the position, applicants must live within the boundaries of District 7, which is made up of 35 counties in the central and western part of the state. A map detailing the district is available on the NU Board of Regents Web site at http://www.nebraska.edu/board.
Individuals interested in the position should send a cover letter and resume, along with a completed application form to Peggy King in the Governor’s Office, at P.O. Box 94848, Lincoln, NE 68509. The application form can be found on the Governor’s Web site at http://www.gov.state.ne.us/bc/app.html, or may be requested by calling the Governor’s Office.
Applications will be accepted until Friday, July 21, when the names of all those applying will be released. In filling the vacancy, the Governor may also choose to seek out additional qualified candidates. Those with questions about the position may call the Governor’s Office at (402) 471-1971.
