A Time for Reflection

By Governor Dave Heineman

May 22, 2006

Dear Fellow Nebraskans:

Each May, we lower our flags in special tribute to the more than 15,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty across this nation.

As Governor, I work very closely with law enforcement agencies so it was a special privilege for me to attend a ceremony held in the State Capitol Rotunda during this year’s observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor fallen officers of the Nebraska State Patrol.

In Nebraska, 128 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1866, and of those 11 were members of the Nebraska State Patrol.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed each year on May 15 in recognition of the all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It is a day to honor not only our federal, state, county, municipal and tribal agency officers, but our game and parks, railroad and correctional officers and the families they’ve left behind.

There is no greater sacrifice than giving one’s life to protect others. The ceremonies held in Lincoln and in communities across the state in memory of those we’ve lost are just one way to ensure that the names and sacrifices of those who served this state so admirably will always be remembered.

They are a way to honor their bravery, remember their courage and demonstrate our gratitude for their sacrifice.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember not only the brave men and women who have fallen in the line of duty, but those who carry on their legacy of bravery and service in their duties today. It is a fitting tribute to those who have given their lives to protect our communities and our great state.

As a veteran of the Army, I know on a very personal level the kind of training and diligence it takes to choose a career that puts the safety and well being of others ahead of one’s own safety. I have a deep appreciation for the work of all those who protect and defend our state.

A career in law enforcement is a dangerous and very demanding line of work, yet for these men and women the importance of service to our communities and see them improved is a strong motivator and we’ve seen so many examples as they execute their duties at a level that is second to none.

I want to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation for the service all of Nebraska’s civil officers have provided to our state. Our roads, neighborhoods, schools, and homes are safer because of their hard work.

Those we honor each May, along with all of Nebraska’s law enforcement and civil officers, deserve our thanks for putting their lives on the line each and every day. I urge all Nebraskans to remember their commitment not just during Peace Officers Memorial Day, but throughout the year.

Their service has made a real and lasting difference, and we are eternally grateful for their dedication to the protection and preservation of our great state.
